Chimithangka Case, PDP refutes defamatory allegations of DPT
The allegation regarding the Chimithangkha Lhakhang donation was thoroughly investigated twice by the ECB. Both investigations conclusively established that the donation to the Lhakhang was not made by the PDP South Thimphu candidate Sonam Tobgay Dorji. During a Press Conference called by the DPT, their South Thimphu candidate Yeshey Zimba stated as quoted in the press: “In an attempt to cover up the misdeed, Sonam Tobgay Dorji had manipulated the people into tampering with the evidence by changing the name in the thram…”The PDP is of the view that the above statement is false and defamatory with the intent of harming the reputation and election prospects of both Sonam Tobgay Dorji and the People’s Democratic Party as a whole.
The DPT accusation that Sonam Tobgay Dorji “manipulated the people into tampering with the evidence” has been proven to hold no ground what-so-ever. During the investigations, it was revealed that entries in the Chimithangkha Lhakhang thram that prove Sonam Tobgay Dorji did not donate the money were in the handwriting and signed by DPT party workers. Furthermore, these DPT party workers who continue to work for the DPT confessed to the investigators that they were not pressured by any person to sign the thram.
The People’s Democratic Party has until now restrained from filing a counter charge in this case. In view of the recent statements made by the DPT which received wide coverage in the press, however, the PDP has decided to file a charge with the ECB on the defamatory and false statements made by their South Thimphu candidate Yeshey Zimba.
