Women chimis join politics
27 June, 2007 - The five female members of the present National Assembly are all joining politics and four have joined the same party.
Four of the five chimis, Lhuentse chimi Deki Pelzom, Dagana chimi Jashma Lama, Phuentsholing chimi Passing Dem and Mongar chimi Sonam have already registered with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).The Wangduephodrang chimi, Chado Pem, told Kuensel that she had not decided which party she would be joining.
A PDP spokesperson said the four chimis who joined them were also the first female party workers to register with the party.
The Lhuentse Menbi chimi Deki Pelzom, 37, was elected in 2000 after competing against her husband, former Menbi chimi. “I want to continue to do something for the people by joining politics and I think more women should participate,” she said.
Dagana chimi Jashma Lama, 36, served as a chimi for the past six years. She was elected for the second time in 2004. “By joining politics, I will have the opportunity to continue my support in local development,” she said. “No body approached me to join the party and this is completely my decision.”
The Wanduephodrang chimi, Chado Pem, 43, was elected this year. “This is just the beginning,” she said. “There is so much I want to do and joining politics will give me the opportunity.” Phuentsholing chimi Passang Dem, 27, was elected as a chimi in 2004. “I was given the opportunity to be the first elected female local leader of my constituency, which was challenging but I am ready to take on new challenges,” she said.
Kuensel could not contact Mongar chimi as she is currently out of the country.
