Young Democrats
Role of Bhutanese Youth in Democratic Bhutan
For democracy to succeed, citizens must be active, not passive, because they know that the success or failure of the government is their responsibility, and no one else’s. Youth’s political participation is of central importance to the future of our democracy. The Bhutanese youth have a critical role to play in the future of our democracy as the youth bring skills and knowledge that will be vital for ensuring a healthy democracy
The fact that nearly 56 % of our population is younger than 25, Bhutan has a very young population. As democracy requires active participation and representation of all sections of the society, youth’s input is not just desirable but absolutely necessary. Youth’s voice can be best understood and represented by a youth. Indeed, when our youth are full participants in the democratic process, a strong base is built for the society since today’s youth is tomorrow’s Bhutan.
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Young Democrats
The PDP believes that the full realization of democracy requires equal and effective participation of all sections of the society. However, since there is low youth participation as Bhutan moves embraces democracy, the PDP established the youth department to: 1. provide a platform for youth to fully participate in the democratic process; 2. to ensure that the plans and programs are responsive to all sections of the society.
The Young Democrats is the Youth’s Wing of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), constituted under Chapter XIV of the Charter of the PDP. Its objective is to encourage the youth to play an active and effective role in laying a strong foundation for our democracy to and in shaping the future of the country. The Young Democrats will strive to promote the systematic participation of youth in identifying impacts of policies and programs, and in creating an enabling environment for youth to make full use of their potentials and skill, thus contributing to a productive workforce and economic growth.
The Party is committed towards ensuring that youth’s concerns, needs and aspirations are taken into account in the design and implementation of the party programs and policies. To achieve this, the Young Democrats will organize a series of discussion forums with youth from all walks of life to understand the needs, concerns and perspective of youth as Bhutan embraces democracy.
